History of the club
Great River Golf Club in Milford, CT is a championship design by Tommy Fazio in 1999 on a 1½ mile stretch of undulating terrain along the Housatonic River. The course features two distinct 9-hole landscapes, with the front side weaving through lower tidal wetlands and the links-style back side elevating high above the Housatonic. In 2015, Sacred Heart University of nearby Fairfield, CT purchased Great River Golf Club with the vision of developing a unique model within the golf industry, college athletic, and university academic structures. In addition to serving a private membership of 300+ alumni & local community members, Great River is the home site of the Sacred Heart Men’s & Women’s Division I Golf Teams with coaching offices, indoor training facilities, and golf instruction staff located inside the Clubhouse.
Since 2023, Great River has also served as the home of the Hartford HealthCare EPSON Tour Women's Championship.

The Home Club for all Pio’s
In 2015, Sacred Heart University purchased 150 acres of land on the Housatonic River in Milford/Orange, CT, which includes the Northeast’s premier semi-private 18-hole Great River Golf Course and a 32,000-square-foot clubhouse. Located just 11 miles away from SHU’s main campus, Great River Golf Club is a signature Tommy Fazio-designed facility that has been ranked fourth-best in Connecticut by Golf.com.
The ownership of the golf course complements Sacred Heart University’s current programs in exercise science, sports communications and sports management.
